Boards, Papers and Wraps: A Materials Guide for Premium Boxes

A premium box is usually three materials working together: a structural board, a printed or coloured wrap, and a surface treatment. Understanding each layer makes specification much easier.

The structural board

Greyboard gives rigid boxes their weight and squareness. Thicker board resists warping and protects heavier contents, but adds cost and shipping weight. Folding cartons use a lighter single board that ships flat and sets up quickly.

Choose thicker board when the box holds glass, is reused as storage, or must feel substantial in hand. Choose lighter formats for high volume, lower value or shipped flat items.

The wrap paper

The wrap carries the visual identity:

• Coated art papers give the sharpest photographic printing
• Uncoated papers feel natural and take emboss well, but show marks
• Textured and specialty papers add tactility, usually printed with screen or foil rather than fine four colour work
• Coloured through papers keep the edge colour consistent when the box is cut

Surface treatments

• Matte lamination softens colour and hides handling marks
• Soft touch lamination adds a velvety feel, popular in beauty and fragrance
• Gloss lamination lifts saturation, useful for confectionery
• Varnish and spot UV create contrast between matte and shiny areas

Internal materials

Inserts do more than hold a product still. Flocked or paper wrapped trays, EVA foam, moulded pulp and card platforms each set a different perceived value and a different cost per unit.

Combining materials sensibly

A common mistake is specifying premium everything. A strong combination is one hero element with restrained support, for example a textured uncoated wrap with a single foil mark, or a clean matte laminate with an embossed logo.

Practical questions to ask your supplier

• Is the paper stocked locally or imported for the order
• How does the material handle repeated opening
• Will the finish show fingerprints in retail conditions
• Are recycled or certified equivalents available at similar quality
